This course introduces Japanese cinema and filmmaking in its relations to Japanese visual, literary, & performing arts, through the study of a dozen or more feature films by some of the world's greatest directors: Kurosawa, Ozu, Mizoguchi, et al. It will pay particular attention to the roles of women, focusing on the unusually strong (from the standpoint of world history) role of women as protagonists, and on the ways that the definitive impact of women's voices on Japanese culture as a whole have shaped Japanese film-making. Readings will be put on reserve in the library and may include feminist film theory, Japanese literature, as well as film analysis and criticism.
