A study of Jewish history, literature, and theology during the Intertestamental Period. A general historical survey from the Persian to the Roman periods will be conducted with particular attention given to the role the post-exilic Jewish communities played within that history. A survey of the breadth of Jewish literature composed during this period will be conducted with particular attention given to the Apocrypha. The theological transformations of Judaism during this period will be explored. Special attention will be given to the relationship between the Old and New Testaments. Selected ancient historians as well as biblical, apocryphal, and pseudepigraphical writings will be read. Class 3. Prerequisite: BIBL 1043 or approval of instructor. (Fall and Distance Learning)
