(4 credits) This course examines the political, social and cultural history of America during the 1960s era from 1954 to 1974. It considers a range of topics including the civil rights movement, the Great Society, the rise of the New Rights, the debate over Vietnam, feminism and sexual liberation movements, black power, the counterculture, the urban crisis, and white backlash. The course emphasizes the transformation of liberalism, the revitalization of conservatism, and the many tensions that both shaped the social movements of the times and profoundly transformed the nation.
