The course investigates how and why art is made, with a focus on different themes in different cultures at different times. Topics include painting media, such as egg tempera, oil, and fresco; techniques in sculpture, including modeling, carving, and casting; photography; printmaking; and building methods and materials. Issues of aesthetics and the changing role of the artist in society are also explored. 3 credits.
