This course examines the evolution of this uniquely American art form over the past 80 years. Jazz types covered include Dixieland, swing, bop, avant-garde and fusion. Students become conversant with the music of many jazz greats, such as Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Frank Morgan and Bill Evans. Instrumentation, forms and rhythms, and the improvisational process are demonstrated through recordings and lectures.
