(Prerequisite: One of the following – HIST 125, HIST 126, PS 219, SPAN 314, PHIL 242)Examines the experiences of Africans in the colonies and former colonies of Latin America and the Caribbean with emphasis on Spanish America and Portuguese Brazil. Units will highlight slavery, the response of slaves to subjugation; the role of free Africans and men and women of color, inter marriage, religion and music.
