PHIL 255 - Ethics and the Environment

Institution:
Neumann University
Subject:
Philosophy
Description:
Students examine several philosophical theories concerning a wide array of environmental issues which are studied from a traditional Western perspective as well as from non-Western ones, e.g., feminism, Native American, and Eastern philosophy. Topics of investigation include the moral standing of non-humans; our obligation, if any, to future generations; and the role of technology in shaping our attitudes toward the environment. These philosophical perspectives are compared and contrasted to economic, political, and religious views regarding the environment. The objective of this course is to enable the student to read, understand, and write about the moral issues inherent in environmental ethics. Prerequisites: PHIL 102 and PHIL 103.
