A detailed treatment of political, social, cultural, and intellectual developments in Europe from 1598 to 1715. The principal focus will be on Western Europe. Themes shall include the evolution of the dynastic monarchies, the "cultural crisis" and the Scientific Revolution, and the emergence of a European statesystem in the Age of Louis XIV.
