This course, emphasizing the post1860 period, examines both the roots of American economic growth and the impact that growth has had on American ideas, culture, and institutions. Topics to be considered include the rise of big business, changes in the internal structure of the business establishment, the development of a corporate culture, shifting attitudes of government toward business, and the state of the modern American economy.
