This course will introduce students to a series of classic texts that have been influential in the development of religious studies as a discipline. Included for study are the works of Sir James Frazer, Karl Marx, Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung, Max Weber, Emile Durkheim, Rudolf Otto, Mircea Eliade, Martin Buber, William James, Clifford Geertz, Victor Turner, and Mary Daly. Their writings will be complemented by a series of ?lms which consider religion, as well as assist in the appreciation of relevant theoretical approaches to the subject. Students also will read relevant ?lm history and theory, and among the course requirements is the creation of a screenplay that expresses and teaches the ideas of a major theorist. 3 credits
