This course traces the development of the American Constitution from its colonial roots to its contemporary interpretations. The impact of the colonial experience, the American Revolution and the Articles of Confederation on the constitutional design adopted by the delegates to the Constitutional Convention will be analyzed in detail. Basic constitutional principles and civil liberties will be examined in light of their historical evolution and their effects on political, economic and social change in American society.
