This course will explore the role of gender in shaping people's lives in Africa since the beginning of colonial rule to the present. European rule and independence have radically changed options available to women. Topics to be discussed include the impact of missionary teachings, changing notions of marriage and family, the AIDS crisis, female circumcision, and women and colonial law. 3 credits.
