This course will explore the historical background to contemporary political and social crises in the Middle East from 1800 to the present. Primary and secondary sources will be used to discuss major themes such as diversity in Islamic thought and practice, the Arab-Israeli conflict, U.S. and foreign influences in the region, the status of women, and different Middle Eastern political and social movements. 3 credits
