An introduction to the linguistic analysis of English sentence structure. Students learn to identify different grammatical forms and their functions, different sentence types, and transformations. The course provides an analytic understanding of students’ pre-existing linguistic knowledge—the knowledge that allows them to generate an infinite number of grammatical patterns with a mere handful of rules. Prerequisites: ENG 164, 165, and either 265 or 266. Credit 3.
