Course examines the nature of language and its various functions, with an emphasis upon English and its cultural and historical contexts. Students explore the structure of language and its role in identity, power and history through such topics as language acquisition, regional and social variation, language manipulation, orality and literacy, and the history of English. Course content varies. English 317 does not satisfy General Education requirements or upper-division literature requirements for English majors, although it is strongly recommended as an elective for students in English and sociology. May be repeated with permission of instructor. Prerequisites: ENG 201, ENG 202, or ENG 203; or permission of instructor.
