It traces its growth and influence and gives attention to key figures active in the process, from primitive Christianity, the medieval period and the Reformation, to modern times. It seeks not so much to discern the unfolding of a grand design as to see people dealing with the immediate realities of life, thereby finding or creating meaning in the engagement.
