Topics include: introduction to cellular and protein structure and function; modeling of enzyme kinetics, DNA transcription, metabolic pathways, cell and microbial growth and product formation; bioprocess operation, scale-up, and design. Class includes a design project. A modern biotechnology process or product is identified, the specific application and market are described (for example, medical, environmental, agricultural) along with the engineering elements of the technology.
