The development of Paris, from the major remodeling initiated under the Second Empire to the advent of modern style in the interwar years, focusing on the changes in architecture and planning which transformed the French capital into a model of urban modernity. The city as a physical environment that has to be understood in terms of varied populations, transport systems, economic activities, and cultural representations. The role played by visual arts in shaping the city, recording its appearance and interpreting its meanings, together with Paris's role as a environment favoring cultural production and exchange.
