Comparison with the Hindu and Japanese traditions to reveal what is unique about Western romantic love. Comparison of art and literature to the practices of real people. Transformations of norms and ideals since ancient times with focus on ethical questions about the permissibility of desire in all its forms, the proper relationship between love and marriage, and the moral status of adultery and jealousy.
