HISTORY 173 - War and Society in Europe, 1000-1750

Institution:
Duke University
Subject:
History
Description:
The relationship of warfare to other aspects of European society and culture, from the rise of European civilization (ca. 1000) to the eve of the modern era. We study the reciprocal influences of warfare, on the one hand, and economic, political and social systems on the other. How warfare came to be justified as the ordinary business of nation-states will be one of our main concerns. We will also study the relationship between warfare and "high" culture - especially works of literature, music and art - and the links between warfare and culture in an anthropological sense.
