Examination of competing tendencies in modern society across cultural contexts and historical time periods concluding with close attention to the present: the secularism linked to increased rationalization (and the rise of the modern state), and persistence of beliefs in the supernatural. Readings on beliefs in magic and the occult drawing attention to overlap between magical phenomena and the workings of capitalism in our contemporary world.
