Techniques in playing on brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments are provided in this course including fingering, slide positions, embouchure formation, and mouthpiece selection and construction. Students also gain experience in instrument care and the making of simple adjustments/repairs. An introduction to the rudiments of drumming is provided with attention given to roll phrasing and the adaptation of the rudiments to standard 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, and 6/8 exercises. Students are given a chance to perform easy solos. (Two hours per week.) Applied Music Major courses consist of private instruction. Unless instructed otherwise, students should take a one-hour lesson per week (2 credits). A minimum of one hour practice per day per credit hour is required of ALL students enrolled in private lessons. All music majors are required to perform in a student recital at least once each semester and are required to attend scheduled student and faculty recitals as well as large ensemble concerts and master classes. All credit in Applied Music is determined by jury examination at the end of each semester of private instruction, acceptable seminar performance and attendance, and satisfactory completion of lesson requirements as prescribed by the private instructor. Advancement is determined by the musical development and proficiency of the student. Each year of study is divided into two parts: Section A and Section B.
