This lecture course traces the development of the visual arts from cave paintings through the 17th century. Works from Prehistoric, Egyptian, Greek, and Roman through Early Christian, Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque art will be discussed. Emphasis will be placed upon understanding the various examples of painting, sculpture, and architecture both in the context within which they were created and as part of the larger picture that constitutes the history of art. (Three hours per week)
