This course traces Western urban development from Ancient Mesopotamia to the beginning of the 20th century. Cities are viewed as distinctive physical environments composed of architectural elements and spatial planning created by social and economic activity. We explore the forces that have shaped these environments and how the relationships between people have been influenced by these urban arrangements during different historical eras.
