This course is designed for students pursuing early childhood or elementary school teacher certification. Emphasis is placed on learning concepts and developing an understanding of mathematics as a body of connected ideas. The NCTM (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics) Principles and Standards for School Mathematics provides a framework for the selection of topics for this course. Topics are presented in a historical context and include an introduction to problem solving; elementary set theory; patterns, relations, and functions; number concepts and relationships; and elementary number theory. Prerequisite: Humanities or social science major, elementary/early childhood major, or permission of instructor; MATH 101 or satisfactory score on the Mathematics Placement Test. 3 semester hours
