This seminar examines the work of scholars engaged in redescribing the beginnings of ancient Israel, of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. It focuses on the critical difference between "beginnings" asa historical category and "origins" as a mythic category, and the implications of this difference forunderstanding the foundation narratives of Western religious traditions. Credit, 3 semester hours. PREREQ: REL 1050 and 1060 or REL 1300 and 2180 or consent of instructor.
