This course deals with contemporary societies from Morocco to Iran. It reviews geography and history of the Middle East and the various religions found there with an emphasis on Islam. The course describes various ethnic groups and their organization as nomad, village, or urban dwellers. The role of women in Middle East society is discussed. (MC)
