Prerequisites: Admission to Teacher Education Program or written permission of the Dean, College of Education, and concurrent enrollment in EDMS/EDSE 50223, or permission of the instructor. Principles and practices of first and second language acquisition as they relate to the development of communication skills. Emphasis is placed on the interrelatedness of language processing (reading, writing, speaking and listening) to facilitate the learner's ability to construct meaning. Strategies to enhance social-communicative and cognitiveacademic language competence, and self-directed learning are addressed. Assessment procedures appropriate to second-language learners are introduced.
