3 hours Instruction in the basic principles of traffi c control, traffi c law enforcement, court procedures, and traffi c law. Emphasis on the need for a professional approach in dealing with traffi c law violators and the police role in accident investigation and traffi c supervision. The student will identify background and underlying principles of the traffi c law enforcement effort; describe the legal requirements which govern and control the making and enforcement of criminal laws and traffi c laws in particular; explain the procedures to maximize the individual offi cer's personal safety during a stop, particularly in a criminal situation; explain the factors which infl uence the offi cer and violator during their face to face contact; explain the importance of meeting the objectives of a traffi c program, i.e. reduction of traffi c fatalities and prosecution of traffi c offenses; and identify the various enforcement activities that lead to achieving an effective traffi c program. (SCANS 1, 3, 6, 9, 11) Prerequisite: None.
