Description: PRE/COREQUISITE: Advanced Criminal Procedure (7004) Students must have completed three semesters of law school to be eligible for this externship. Priority for this externship is given to third year students. Regardless of how many semesters a student may work/volunteer at the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office or any other District Attorney's Office, that student may only participate in a District Attorney's Externship (and receive Law School credit) for one semester. Students must purchase a copy of the Pennsylvania Criminal Code. Participating students must obtain student practice certification. Application found at click here. Participating students will serve as externs in the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office and will work with the Municipal Court Unit. Typically, students represent the Commonwealth in preliminary hearings and misdemeanor trials, under the supervision of Assistant District Attorneys. Each extern is required to spend at least twelve (12) hours per week working at the District Attorney's Office. This time includes a mandatory weekly class session conducted at the District Attorney's Office every Wednesday from 3-5 p.m. Two full-day orientation sessions on two Wednesdays early in the semester are also required. In addition, each extern must maintain a journal of his/ her experiences and meet every other week with the Law School faculty supervisor. The externship is graded Pass/Fail. The supervising attorney at the District Attorney's Office will evaluate each extern.
