This course examines the basic structure of historical and contemporary societies and cultures of the Middle East and North Africa, with a special emphasis on Egypt. Social organization, law, family, tribe, gender, rural-urban migration, education and social change are among the areas of inquiry in this course. Special attention is given to Christian ethnic groups throughout the Middle East.
