For certification application: click here Participating students serve as externs at the Defender Association of Philadelphia. The student extern may work on preliminary hearings and Municipal Court trials. Each student extern is required to spend at least 12 hours per week working for the Defender Association. This includes, but is not limited to, two class sessions--one on Wednesday mornings and the other on Friday mornings. Most of the class sessions are at the Defender Association's office in Center City. However, some classes are held elsewhere in Philadelphia and court attendance is required. Students must provide their own transportation. In addition, each student extern must maintain a journal of experiences and meet biweekly with the law school supervisors. The externship is graded PASS/FAIL. The supervising attorney(s) at the Defender Association will evaluate the student-externs.
