Develops skills in the performance of a variety of blood collection methods using proper techniques and universal precautions. Includes vacuum collections devices, syringes, capillary skin punctures, butterfly needles and blood culture, and specimen collection on adults, children, and infants. Emphasis on infection prevention, proper patient identification, labeling of specimens and quality assurance, specimen handling, processing and accessioning. Topics include professionalism, ethics, and medical terminology. Utilizes a student laboratory for experiences in basic phlebotomy procedures. Prerequisites: Admission to the College and approval by the program director. Semester Hours 2 (1 lec/2 lab)
