This course will focus on an investigation of the various theoretical models of the reading process and will connect insights of language and cognition as a vehicle for developing successful reading. Students will become aware of the relationship between the reading and writing process. Students will also study a wide range of genres as a means of developing higher-level reading and writing abilities. Practical features in this course will include a critique of the use of basal reading as a means of developing literacy skills with special attention given to the development of phonemic awareness and phonics as an integral part of the reading/thinking process.
