A multidisciplinary course examining the shifting relationship between "tradition" and "modernity" in East Asia. Tcourse will explore such topics as kinship, gender relations and stratification systems in the Asian past and present. Students will investigate some of the different paths of development that Asian societies have followed in the last two centuries including communism and state-directed capitalism. The course will close with Asia's increasing significance in the globalization of capitalism. Prerequisite: WRTG-101, HIST-11X
