A multidisciplinary introduction to African civilization through a variety of sources including oral epics, film, music, literature, ethnographies, historical studies and visual materials with emphasis upon the 20th century. The course will investigate such topics as the cultural roots of African leadership, the enduring importance of family and community, the impact of the trans-Atlantic trade in human beings on African societies, the struggle to achieve a just, multi-ethnic society in Southern Africa, and the present continent-wide democratization process. Prerequisite: WRTG-101, HIST-11X
