This fi eld-based course is designed to equip the pre-service teacher with the knowledge and strategies for understanding and promoting literacy development for children in grades four to eight. Making connections between reading/language arts and the other content areas is emphasized. The course focuses on strategies and skills for reading comprehension, competence in written communication, and study and inquiry skills. A variety of assessment principles are learned as tools to plan and implement instruction and identify those students who need additional support to master the curriculum.
