Prereq: junior status. A survey of representative sections of the Hebrew Bible (the Old Testament for Christians) and related literature. Biblical texts are analyzed as expressions of the ways in which groups or individuals understood themselves, their world, and God. The historical and cultural contexts in which the texts were originally written are emphasized with attention to the ways that elements of the Biblical tradition developed under changing historical circumstances.
