This course applies economic theory to a variety of amateur and professional sports, including baseball, hockey, football, basketball, soccer, and golf. Principal areas of interest are labor, markets, industrial organization, and public fi nance. Topics for discussion: unions and strike behavior, the monopoly power of leagues, the baseball antitrust exemption, the effect of free agency on competitive balance and player salaries, and the funding of stadiums.
