Examines the city as a unique site of social life, using an historical and comparative approach to identify key features in the development of industrial, post-industrial, and global cities. Topics include human and spatial divisions, institutional structure of urban areas (including economic, political, and religious dimensions), cosmopolitanism, and pluralism.
