The political institutions of the Roman republic and the circumstances of their collapse, beginning with the tribunate of Tiberius Sempronius Gracchus in 133 B.C.E. We will read (in translation) the primary ancient sources and consider secondary interpretations that have been formulated in recent decades. Topics include the impact of foreign conquest on the economy and society of Italy, the development of a professional Roman army and its politial repercussions, and politics in Rome in the age of Cicero and Caesar.
