Topics include the last feudal age (the Edo Period), the profound changes of the Meiji Restoration of 1868, the development of the Japanese nation-state, the building of the Japanese empire, victory and defeat in WW II, and postwar economic growth. The course concludes with an analysis of the economic difficulties that plagued Japan in the 1990s.
