Topics considered include the concepts of individualism and society, the ideology of progress, the cultural dimensions of science and technology, the place of the city and urban culture in European civilization, the politics of class, race, and gender, the importance of Empire for European self-identity, and the significance of World War I and the Russian Revolution as expressions of the conflict between tradition and modernity.
