Credits: 3; Prereq: 3 hours of history. This course traces the emergence of modern concepts of truth and justice by focusing on the historical use of evidence in both science and law. Beginning with 16th-century witchcraft (concepts of act, theory, proof and observation) the course concludes with cases involving DNA, child testimony, expert witnesses, and false memory. Themes include observation and interpretation, identity and possession, competence and expertise.
