Prerequisites: none. Students in this class will design, build, and launch their own near-space capsule on a weather balloon, 15-20 miles into the stratosphere at the very edge of space. Students learn about the composition and conditions of the atmosphere and near-space environment, how to engineer a vehicle for that environment, take pictures and meteorological data during the flight, track the capsule with GPS, and recover the capsule on a parachute.
