An examination of the most enduring theme in both the literary and visual arts of China from the Han dynasty to the modern period. An introductory unit explores the philosophical foundations for later cultural development. The course then investigates the theme of landscape as it is expressed in literature (especially poetry) and painting, as well as how these two arts informed the making of gardens.
