An introduction to the most important genres and themes in Chinese painting from roughly the midfourth to the end of the 14th century. Special attention will be given to the illustration of narrative and lyric poetry, the rise of monumental landscape painting, the ideal of reclusion, the painting theory of scholars, imperial patronage, Ch'an (Zen) Buddhist painting, and the dynamic interaction between painting and calligraphy.
