This course explores first person discourse in contemporary American writing. We study varieties of self-representation through short stories, essays, novels, memoirs, poems, graphic novels, song lyrics, and film. Works by Raymond Carver, Jhumpa Lahiri, Brad Land, Alison Bechdel, and Bob Dylan will be read. The class also functions as a writer's workshop, with many writing assignments in a variety of forms.
