A study of the conventions of the musical stage; how music functions as a vehicle for dramatic action in stage works based on differing theories of drama. At the core of the course are video recordings of operas and lighter works (operettas, musical comedies, etc.) by composers as varied as Mozart, Verdi, Wagner, Britten, Gershwin, Bernstein, Sondheim, and Picker.
