The sociological study of the character and functions of religion primarily in the United States. Attention will be focused on the social role of religion and the effect of social conditions on religion. Topics will include the social construction of religious worldviews and identities, religious ritual and experience, modernity and secularization, religious institutions in the U.S., and the relationship between religion and race, gender, sexuality, politics and violence. Prerequisite: SOC 100. Gallagher
